Tasting- Beliveau Estate Reflection

Name:  Reflection
Varietal:  100% Traminette
Region:  SW Virginia
Country:  USA
Year:  2011
Price:  $24

Winery Critic:  This hearty Traminette has complex notes of apricot, lychee, and lemon.  This wine is a luscious and bold sipping wine.  **Gold Medal Winner**

My Review:  This wine was not available for tasting by the glass.  However, my friend Sarah bought a bottle for us to share and try out.  It was tart on the nose and had hints of apricots and citrus fruits.  It was very sweet on the palate with a lot of apricot coming through.  Not my favorite of the day because I am not a huge fan of apricots.  Overall a very well-made wine.  I wouldn't give it a gold medal or anything but it wasn't bad!

I drank this wine on its own with no food pairings.

Tasting- Beliveau Estate Serenity

Name:  Serenity
Varietal:  100% Chambourcin
Region:  SW Virginia
Country:  USA
Year:  2011
Price:  $19

Winery Critic:  This after dinner favorite is a blend of two Chambourcins.  Its decedent yet mellow flavor pairs fabulously with Chocolate.  Silver Medalist!

My Review:  This wine was slightly tart on the nose.  It had hints of raspberries and dark cherries.  When tasting this wine it had a medium body and was slightly fruity.  A decent wine on its own.

I tried this wine with dark chocolate chips and it was absolutely amazing!!  100x better with the chocolate.  The chocolate really mellowed out the wine and allowed it to sing in a whole new way (and I don't even like chocolate).  A very interesting and delicious combination!

Tasting- Beliveau Estate Rainbow

Name:  Rainbow, American Zinfandel
Varietal:  100% Zinfandel
Region:  SW Virginia
Country:  USA
Year:  2011
Price:  $24

Shop Critic:  Full-bodied with the peppery overtones that Zins are known for.  Enjoy this spicy Red Zinfandel with beef or blue cheese!

My Review:  The nose was lighter and fruitier than other Zinfandels I've tried.  It was very spicy on my palate with lots of black pepper over raspberries.  I really enjoyed this wine more than some of the other zinfandels they offered.  16.1% alcohol and you wouldn't even know.  I think the spice really covered up the alcohol well.

I drank this wine on its own with no food pairings.

Tasting- Beliveau Estate Summer Rose

Name:  Summer Rose Table Wine
Varietal:  50% Chambourcin, 50% Leon Millot
Region:  SW Virginia
Country:  USA
Year:  2012
Price:  $15

Winery Critic:  A yummy blend of reds.

My Review:  This wine had a very light nose.  Notes of fresh apples, strawberries, and raspberries.  When tasting this wine I was first hit with a lot of residual sweetness but when I let the wine sit in my mouth this really delicious flavor of cinnamon apples and cloves came through!  It was a really awesome surprise and I had never had a wine change flavors so distinctly before.  This was a very interesting and overall great wine!  I could see myself sitting on my couch in the winter time enjoying this wine.  Great!!

I drank this wine on its own with no food pairings.

Tasting- Beliveau Estate A Cappella

Name:  A Cappella Red Table Wine
Varietal:  100% Landot Noir
Region:  Virginia
Country:  USA
Year:  NV
Price:  $16

Shop Critic:  This 100% Landot Noir is light yet fruity with distinct overtones of blueberry.  This is a wonderful sipping wine.

My Review:  The nose on this wine was very light, sweet, and fruit forward.  It had notes of strawberries and blueberries.  When tasting this wine I was reminded immediately of concord grape juice and blueberry.  It had a very thick, jammy quality.  Very unique and a great wine to drink on a summer day!

I drank this wine on its own with no food pairings.

Tasting- Caprice de Bastor-Lamontagne

Name:  Caprice de Bastor-Lamontagne
Varietal:  60% Semillon, 36% Sauvignon Blanc, 4% Muscadelle
Region:  Sauternes
Country:  France
Year:  2004
Price:  $7.95

Shop Critic:  Very clean, with lemon, mineral and honey aromas that follow through to a medium body.  Shows vanilla, apple and melon flavors, with a medium finish.  Lightly sweet.

My Review:  This was probably one of the weirdest wines I have ever smelled.  It was very crisp with some lemon and honey but was completely overpowered by this weird alcohol smell almost like petrol or antiseptic mouthwash (not mint).  After tasting this wine, I was even more confused.  It tasted a little bit like vanilla extract gone really bad.  It was super sweet but not in a good way.  It also kind of reminded me a little bit of those freeze-y pops you can get in the summer time in the plastic tubes that you freeze but the yellow artificial pineapple flavor.  Very strange, very unique, and very not for me.

I drank this wine with no food pairings.

Tasting- Torre Castillo Alegre

Name:  Torre Castillo Alegre
Varietal:  100% Monastrell
Region:  Jumilla
Country:  Spain
Year:  2010
Price:  $9.95

Shop Critic:  4 months in new American oak barrels.  Bright ruby-red.  Dried cherry, pipe tobacco and rose aromas with a hint of woodsmoke.  Sweet and fleshy on the palate, with blackberry and cherry flavors complimented by licorice and a suggestion of dried herbs.  The cherry and smoke notes repeat on the finish.

My Review:   This wine was deep dark red in color.  It smelled just like fig newtons or prunes with some musty smoke in the background.  After I smelled this wine a couple more times, however, some interesting black licorice hints were coming through.  This wine was sharp on my throat, had no fruit and was extremely oak-y and smokey.  It was SO DRY people around me were almost coughing as they tasted this wine.  It was also a bit vegetative, which I thought was weird.  I really did not like this wine and would not get this one again!

I drank this wine on its own with no food pairings.

Tasting- Wilson Daniels Merlot

Name:  Wilson Daniels Merlot
Varietal:  Paso Robles Merlot
Region:  Central Coast, California
Country:  USA
Year:  2010
Price:  $7.95

Shop Critic:  Made predominantly from Paso Robles grapes, the wine is full-bodied and silky yet robust, with aromas of black cherry and plum and a palate of blackberry, raspberry and blueberry jam laced with vanilla and toast.

My Review:  This wine had a great deep red, brick color.  The nose was full and balanced with a lot of fruity, jammy, plum-y qualities.  When I tasted this wine, the first thing that hit me were the dry, mouth-smacking tannins.  It was slightly smokey with very little fruit.  This wine was also quite bitter which my palate did not agree with it, but it was a decent wine overall.

I drank this wine on its own with no food pairings.

Tasting- Bricco Dei Tati Rose

Name:  Bricco Dei Tati Rose
Varietal:  100% Barbera
Region:  Piedmont
Country:  Italy
Year:  2012
Price:  $6.95

Shop Critic:  Fresh with aromas of strawberries, cherries, and rose petals, this is an ideal wine with shellfish, salads, chicken, and appetizers.

My Review:  This wine had a smooth and creamy aroma with notes of roses and vanilla.  It had a fruity-sweet smell as opposed to a sugar-y sweet one.  It had an artificial banana flavor that reminded me of the laffy taffy.  Overall a very delicious wine.  Slight banana with some cherry undertones.

I drank this wine on its own with no food pairings.

Tasting- Smoking Loon Sauvignon Blanc

Name:  Smoking Loon Sauvignon Blanc
Varietal:  Sauvignon Blanc
Region:  California
Country:  USA
Year:  2009
Price:  $7.95

Shop Critic:  This bleached blonde beauty is reminiscent of fresh green apples, pineapple and has hints of hibiscus blossoms.  The concentration of zesty lemon and gooseberry fills your mouth leaving notes of thyme and melon behind.  The bright acid in this wine gives you a zing while the fruit keeps your mouth watering for more.  This wine pairs beautifully with a grilled prawn salad with a grapefruit vinaigrette, veggie spring rolls or grilled tilapia with mango salsa.

My Critic:  This wine was very very pale yellow and translucent in color.  The nose was a little flabby but had some notes of lemon and apples.  I also sensed something a little unpleasant in the nose, maybe urine or something with that pungency.  The taste was quite flat, not much acidity really anywhere.  The lemon flavors came through but were very blah.   This is a 4 year old Sauvignon Blanc and you could tell it was way past its prime.  Overall, not a good wine for me.

I drank this wine on its own with no food pairings.

Dinner - Zeppolis (Spain and Italy, Vino Di Vino)

Our Host: Matthew Burch
Zeppoli's is an Italian restaurant and wine shop located in Blacksburg, VA.  Every Sunday they do a wine/food pairing dinner for a mere 15 bucks, pretty sweet deal!  Our host was Matthew Burch and the theme of this particular Sunday evening dinner pairing was different affordable Spanish and Italian wines from the same line.  We sampled wines from the Cortenova, Opera Prima, Avivo Vino name brands along with some other bonus bottles (11 in total!).  I attended this wine dinner with my friend Megan Kennedy.

Meg and I at the beginning of our dinner!

Our meal was set up buffet style and we had plenty to choose from!  I got a little bit of everything so I could see what foods went best with which wines.  The food options offered were: turkey pesto wraps, meatballs, pasta alfredo with ham and peas, Mediterranean salad with feta, olives, peperoncinis and onions w/ an italian dressing, a feta mozzarella and cheddar cheese and pepperoni pizza, various breads with oil for dipping, and cheeses.  The wide variety of cheeses included: smoked gouda, horseradish herb, as well as some others.  We ran out of the meatballs early on which was disappointing because they were so delicious!! But at least we got a little taste.
Plate #1 of many
The tastings were placed throughout the dinner.  Matthew would tell us a little bit of background of each of the wines and let us ask questions, then we got to taste the wine and try different foods along with each.

The first wine we sampled was the Cortenova NV Prosecco DOC Treviso Italy.  It had a sweet fruity aroma and was extremely dry to the taste.  This wine was delicious when paired with the feta, mozzarella, and cheddar pizza as well as the pasta dish.  It was horrible however with the smoked gouda.  This was an excellent palate cleanser for the beginning of our meal.
The Whites

The second wine on the line up was the Cortenova Pinot Grigio DOC Italy (Magnum).  This wine had a fresh and floral nose and tasted like pears and bananas with a bright yet smooth mouthfeel.  This wine was great with the pasta alfredo.  It was decent w/ the meatballs.  I did not like this wine with bread however which really surprised me!  It almost made my mouth too dry.

I was really excited about the third wine because it was the first Vinho Verde I had ever tried.  It was the AV Vinho Verde AOC Portugal.  This very summery wine had a light aroma and taste, was lightly fizzy, and fruity.  This wine was amazingly versatile when paired with foods.  It was good with just about everything!  Fantastic with meatballs and cheese (especially the horseradish herb cheese).  I'm not the biggest fan of olives and when I tried this wine with the olive bread it actually made the olives not taste as bad!  I never knew wine could actually make me enjoy olives.

The fourth wine was the Opera Prima NV Sparkling Moscato.  This was a good, sweet, fruity, bubbly wine that paired well with just about everything.  It was really good with the turkey wraps and pizza.  It brought out the garlicky pesto which was very intriguing.

Me not enjoying the Chardonnay horseradish pairing. :(
The last of the whites was the Opera Prima 2011 Chardonnay La Mancha DO Spain.  At 12% alcohol this chardonnay was fresh on the nose with some tropical fruit notes.  This wine was great with pasta and the salad.  It accented the spicyness of the pepper and was delicious with pizza as well.   This wine was HORRIBLE however with the horseradish cheese.  It just made it all taste musty and was not playing well with my palate.

Now onto the reds...

The first of the reds we sampled was the Aviva Vino 2009 "Aletta" Garnacha Campo de Borja Spain.  This was a simple, easy-drinking, "medium body fruit bomb".  It tasted of blueberries and blackberries at the forefront and had smokey hints as well.  It was not a good meatball wine, nor did it pair well with the turkey pesto wraps...YUCK.  However it was amazing with salad, specifically with the onions and feta.

Meg enjoying the Cortenova Sangiovese
Next up was the Opera Prima 2011 Tempranillo La Mancha DO Spain.  A very fruity red wine overall, with strawberry, raspberry, black and blueberry flavors.  It was a no-go for me with the pasta alfredo and made the pepper in the salad way to spicy for my taste.  It was ok with the turkey wraps, but was great with the bread dipped in oil!

Third for the reds was the Cortenova 2011 Sangiovese di Puglia IGT Italy.  This wine had good body with cherry and strawberry flavors.  It had lovely tannins and a long finish.  It paired well with almost everything!! It was good with the horseradish, spicy things, cheeses (especially the smoked gouda), pasta alfredo, and turkey wraps.  Not so great with the salad, namely just the lettuce.

The Cortenova 2010 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC Italy was a basic red wine for me.  There was some slight acidity, well balanced tannins, and some good fruity flavors.  Fantastic with pizza and pasta.  The turkey and cheeses were take it or leave it with this wine.  It tasted horrible with the olive bread for me.  It had a way of just making the olive-y taste linger which was not pleasant for me.  However, it did have a way of making the salad taste fresher, which I thought was quite remarkable!

The last of the reds was the Damilano 2009 "Marghe" Nebbiolo d'Alba DOCG Piedmont Italy.   It was drying on the palate, yet was very velvety and smooth.  It was delicious with the feta cheese, alfredo, and horseradish and played off each other quite interestingly.

Our surprise bonus wine was the Morada Sangria.  It was SUPER FRUITYYYY and sweet (85 grams of sugar sweet).  Had some citrus flavors as well as some peachy, appley, banana-y notes.  It was wayyy too sweet for the barbecue meatballs, however the pasta was good at cutting the sweetness and gave the overall taste good balance.  I started noticing it was good with creamy, thick foods which brought the balance to the table.

The wine line-up.
This was such a cool experience for me and really opened my eyes to just how different foods can taste when paired with different wines.  It opened a door to a whole new world of wines and tastes for me!  I am excited to do more and more wine pairing dinners in the future!

Tasting- Ruta 22 Malbec

Name:  Ruta 22 Malbec
Varietal:  100% Malbec
Region:  Patagonia
Country:  Argentina
Year:  2011
Price:  $7.95

Shop Critic:  Stout and dense from the beginning, with blackberry and violet aromas.  Despite being a bold and dark Malbec, this is fresh and composed, with sweet blackberry and cassis flavors.  Good on the finish, with candied fruit and caramel sweetness.

My Review:  This wine had a mild, smooth nose with lots of black cherry aroma.  It was also pungently bitter.  After tasting this wine, the first thing that jumped out at me were the dryyy tannins.  However, once the dryness mellowed out a bit I got some hints of fruit; strawberries and blackberries came through.  Tart on the finish.  Overall I enjoyed this wine!

I had this wine on its own with no food pairings.

Tasting- Chateau Serres Sainte Lucie Corbieres

Name:  Chateau Serres Sainte Lucie Corbieres
Varietal:  Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre
Region:  Corbieres
Country:  France
Year:  2009
Price:  $4.95

Shop Critic:  Superb dark garnet color with a few reflections of dark orange.  Intense nose of ripe fruits, spices, and roasted coffee.  The palate is rounded and full, with silky matured tannins and hints of vanilla.  This wine is rich and powerful with layers of tannins.

My Review:  BLACK OLIVES! BLACK OLIVES! BLACK OLIVES!! is exactly what this wine smelled like.  It took me a while to figure out what it was but as soon as I realized what the aroma was it was hard for me to pick out anything else except for black olives.  The nose was so powerful I could almost taste the black olives.  I did detect some dark fruits as well, a little bit of blackberries and black currants.  The mouthfeel was surprisingly silky yet quite tannic and dry.  There were hints of black olive flavor throughout with some hints of vanilla as well.  A very interesting, round-bodied wine.  Definitely some points for originality on this one.

I did not drink this wine with any food pairings.

Tasting- Cresta Azul

Name:  Cresta Azul
Varietal:  Moscatel, Macabea, Parellada, Xarel-lo
Region:  Emporda
Country:  Spain
Year:  NV
Price:  $5.95

Shop Critic:  Peach, orange cream and vanilla flavors mingle in this softly bubbly white.  Off-dry, but with crisp acidity and a clean finish.

My Review:  This wine did not have the most appealing color; pale, yellow-brown, almost straw-like.  However this wine was very intriguing.  The first smell on the nose I detected was buttery biscuits!  Then after smelling the wine a second and third time I picked up some dreamsicle and peaches.  While tasting this wine there was a sweet punch in the front of my palate followed by a breakthrough of acidity.  It was quite smooth with some hints of vanilla throughout.  Overall not a bad wine!

I drank this wine on it's own with no food pairings.

Tasting- Veleta Tempranillo Rosado

Name:  Veleta Tempranillo Rosado
Varietal:  100% Tempranillo
Region:  Granada
Country:  Spain
Year:  2010
Price:  $3.95

Shop Critic:  Fresh in flavor and crisp in texture, this dry rose offers berry, tart cherry and light herbal flavors, with firm acidity and a clean finish.  Focused and juicy.

My Review:  Fantastic wine!!  A delicious play of maraschino cherries on the nose rounded out with some sweet, creamy notes.  Very fruity and delightful aromas.  When I tasted this wine it was surprisingly smooth and soft with not too much acidity (especially trying this wine right after a Espumoso).  It had a luscious, creamy mouthfeel with a smooth finish.  I tasted hints of caramel and cherries in this wine.  I loved this wine and bought a bottle right away.  How could you pass it up at only $3.95!

I drank this wine with no food pairings.

Tasting- Veleta Brut Vino Espumoso Rosado

Name:  Veleta Brut Vino Espumoso Rosado
Varietal:  100% Tempranillo
Region:  Granada (South Central)
Country:  Spain
Year:  NV
Price:  $3.95

Shop Critic:  Rose salmon with copper reflections.  Slow rising fine bubble that forms "lace" and "rosary".  In the nose is complex and elegant with red fruit, citric, exotic, fresh flowers, and notes of dry fruits and dry flowers.  Fresh, gentle and alive.  Perfectly integrated "perlage" with serious and subtle flavors of dry fruits, pomegranate and lemonade.  Long lasting scent of flowers and herbs.

My Review:  This gorgeous wine was a pale amber, almost rusty color.  It smelled just like Welch's white grape juice.  The nose was also slightly reminiscent of the wine you get in church.  While tasting this wine the first thing to hit me was the effervescence.  Bubbles like crazy!  It had a bit of an acidic bite, but no real assertive flavors to speak of.  I have a difficult time trying to pick out the flavors in this wine behind all the bubbles.  I did detect some hints of lemon and apricots.  This wine had a very short mid palate but hit the back of my tongue with very tart beats.

I drank this wine on it's own with no food.
